BACKGROUND: TGP wiki | Jason Mendoza

PERSONALITY:

"What do you think the Bad Place will be like for you? I'll probably be at a Skrillex concert, and I'll be waiting for the bass drop... and it'll never come."

To put it simply, Jason Mendoza is a simple individual. He's childish and immature, impulsive and a bit on the selfish side.

He's from Florida, what do you expect (sorry Florida).

His cause of death was dying in a safe that he'd hidden himself in, with only a snorkel (and no holes in the safe) for air as they tried to rob a Mexican food restaurant. It takes him a really long time into his afterlife to realize just why that didn't work. His occasional "helpful advice" is usually an anecdote about his escapades as a part of a dance crew.

In life, he was an amateur EDM DJ (he wasn't failed, just pre-successful), vine star, and (fake) drug dealer. None of which were real jobs. After being told that his own music is awful he's given the chance to impersonate a masked DJ, but he soon after gets tired of playing someone else's music and tries to play his own... which he eventually gets in legal trouble for. Rather than letting that go, he blows the DJ's boat up to get back at him ... with a molotov cocktail.

Molotovs are kind of his thing. He throws a molotov and suddenly he has a whole new problem!

He's simple and easy amused. His lack of understanding makes him positive and upbeat, even in situations where it's really not at all warranted. He loves video games, Arianna Grande and the Jacksonville Jaguars. It's not too much of a stretch to say that the reason that he's in the Bad Place isn't just because he is a bad person - the things he does are indeed bad. But there's a lack of understanding when it comes to that. When he first arrives in the Good Place, he's mistaken for a Buddhist Monk under a vow of silence. Beliving that this is a prank or a reality TV show, Jason ... doesn't correct him. He goes along with it.

He meets his soul-mate, Tahani - who struggles with the silence.

But he presses on. Until at a party, Eleanor reveals to him that she's here as an accident, only then does he reveal that he's not actually a Buddhist monk, but a dirt-bag from Florida after sending a cryptic note about her not belonging there. She has to tell him the stakes, because he doesn't completely get what will happen if they're found out (an eternity of being tortured in the Bad Place) and convince him to join the philosophy lessons that Chidi is giving her to help her become a better person. When Jianyu (the monk he's mistaken for) is realized to speak - Tahani tries to get him to open up, to do more soul-mate things. Awkward outings in which he asks Chidi to accompany them as a third wheel because he's afraid of her, and also being found out.

Which he does, when Tahani sees him at a party and how great he is with a keg and discovers his Bud-Hole. The room full of junk food, video games, and a poster of Arianna Grande.

After Tahani discovers and takes him to Michael, he's tested with a litmus test to see if he truly belongs there. Asked questions about his life, to decide if he's a good person or not. He gleefully admits his crimes, and that he had a personalized license plate AND has gone to several RHCP concerts, all of which show that he's there by mistake.

Eleanor and Jason are set to be sent to the Bad Place for real this time, so the two of them, and his wife Janet run off to the Medium Place to hide since the demons can't track them there, but they learn that their soulmates - Chidi and Tahani are gonna be sent to the Bad Place to take their place, he cheers, realizing that he and Janet can be together. It's their honeymoon and he wants to have sex with her, okay? It's Eleanor's convincing that changes his mind.

Jason is also surprisingly kind, and when one of his friends has doubts, he manages to reassure them. When Michael has a break-down, after discovering his mistake of letting him in - he manages to calm him. Sometimes his advice is just a completely off beat story about his past but ... it helps, strangely enough. There's an empathetic side to him. Also, while his positive attitude can sometimes come in at inappropriate moments, that's not always the case.

Michael's plan is thwarted by Eleanor's discovery. The plan to torture Eleanor, Jason, Tahani and Chidi by telling them that they're in the Good Place, when everything about it is terrible and awful and set to torture them. She finds it out over and over and over in season two - but Jason figures it out one time. No place where they argue all the time, there's no NFL Red Zone and nobody knows who Blake Bortles is could POSSIBLY be the Good Place.

During every reboot the four of them always manage to work together, and try and help one another. After the last failed reboot, Michael hatches a plan to work against the demons and it'll benefit them as he can warn them about the ways that they're to be tortured. During this time, they continue to learn about being better people and more philosophy under Chidi's instruction. Jason included. But he still doesn't really understand, remains simple minded, and easily amused. When it comes to making the big decisions, such as trusting Michael and working with them Eleanor states as much.

But one time that molotov he threw did actually save them from being caught by the demons, soooo.

Out of everyone, Jason and Eleanor are the most alike. Neither of them were very good people before, they were both trash-bags, it's just that he's from Florida and she's from Arizona. He is very much the opposite of Tahani, who is poised and elegant and graceful - and charitable, even if her charity is usually born out of showing up her sister. He's nothing like Chidi, who is intelligent and moral.

Jason bonds with Janet, particularly after her first reboot when her powers are not 100% yet, he reassures her and they wind up getting married. Even after the reboots, they remain close. Eleanor shows up as he's about to marry Tahani and tells him that he and Janet were once married, though they remain on complicated ground for a while longer.

POWER:

BORTLES! - Yelling "Bortles" or "Jaguars rule!" while holding a bottle in hand will turn it into a molotov cocktail, during a problem that needs to be solved. Depending on Jason's motivation when throwing it, (is it a wrong or selfish thing he wants or will it benefit someone else?) it will either resolve the issue or escalate it further AND things will be on fire on top of it.

DANCE OFF, BRO - Where's that EDM music coming from? Do you feel the sudden urge to join Jason's awesome dance crew? No, well now you do. Jason can summon people to join his dance crew and dance like they've never danced before.

FLORIDA MAN - To be able to give someone a one way trip to Florida just by talking about it. No, not just Heropa (though it is possible). But any one of six random locations, anywhere in the state:

1. A nightclub
2. A Jaguars game
3. A frozen yougurt shop
4. A swamp
5. A rock garden
6. Player's choice

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: [ Jason surveys the camera with a look of utmost seriousness, he absolutely means business here... or would, if not for the candy hanging out of his mouth. ]

There is something that I've been meaning to ask for a long time now.

[ By now, Jason has been here a few weeks - give or take. But he's actually only been meaning to ask this for a day or two, after making the discovery earlier. ]

Has anyone been able to do something here that they weren't able to do before? Like, they suddenly got superpowers? Because I think I have some. And I didn't even have an accident with radiation...

[ No, he didn't bother with the information in his file.

He trails off, lighting up at the slow realization... ]

This is so dope!
